Recently Montreal hosted its annual Fashion Week. Vancouver photographer Kim Akrigg now residing in Toronto went on behalf of Assignment Fashion to get a look at the shows and shoot the collections.
I am always amazed at the forward thinking of Canada’s Designers and how each one takes into account their cliental and incorporates some of their regions style, while always searching for a greener alternative. We tend to dismiss Canada as a go to fashion country because we are a younger Nation and sometimes have an inferiority complex which keeps us from extolling the virtues of our artists.
This years Montreal Fashion Week only proves that Canada is at the forefront of cutting edge fashion and what better city the Canada’s art Capital to showcase these collections.

Marie Saint Pierre

Fashion designer Marie Saint Pierre established Marie Saint Pierre Design Inc. and has been considered one of Canada’s great design icons ever since. She is also a charity founder and an independent spirit.

Considered an avant-garde designer, Marie Saint Pierre is known for her layering techniques and fluid lines, creating an imaginative juxtaposition of textures and colors.

DUY

The eponymous Montreal-based high-end ready-to-wear line created by Duy Nguyen in 2001 has won numerous fans for its sharp tailoring and impeccable cuts. Duy has always experimented with fabrics and patterns of the finest quality. His unmistakable precision, his mastery of cut and his high-precision tailoring have created a unique tailoring approach that has become his signature. His timeless pieces have made him a favourite of women looking to be beautifully dressed, regardless of the time of day or the season, and with fashion editors and industry players who have been rightfully impressed with his edgy contemporary styling. “My clothes are edgy and innovative yet very wearable. They have a refined sensibility with unexpected details to catch the eye,” says Duy.

Melissa Nepton

Fashion designer Mélissa Nepton specializes in modern, ready-to-wear couture that targets the urban career woman. Hers is a vision that reflects both her personality and view of fashion: “For me, fashion is a vigorous expression that impacts women’s lives in a positive way. And in return, women bring to fashion a sense of sensuality, fluidity and femininity. It’s a communication rooted in comfort, practicality and confidence.”

Mélissa understood at a young age that fabrics were creative tools she wanted to explore as she watched her mother create theater costumes and children’s clothes. Mélissa quickly embraced a steadfast road to fashion perfection. Annie50

Founded February 14, 2005, the business has since not ceased to evolve, due to its owners’ complementary experiences and skills. Occupying primordial roles in the company (crafting & production by Annie, and marketing & finance by Amélie), they have united their respective talents in order to create their collections – choosing and deciding styles, cutting, and materials. Inspired by the Fifties, the collections emphasize on femininity and a taste for cuteness. Often snug, cozy, and displaying classic designs of the era, the clothes attract a young crowd with a passion for Rock and Roll as much as a more mature crowd looking for originality and femininity. Resulting of a desire in its production ethics, the company’s line-up is distributed mainly through independent shops that specialize in designer clothing. Dinh Ba

Born in Saigon, Dinh bá came toMontrealat the age of eight. From an early age, he was very artistic, and loved drawing, and entered the world of fabrics and garments while helping his seamstress mother.

In time, he mastered garment creation and quickly became a true fashion couturier. In 2000, he completed his College Degree in fashion design atLasalleCollege. From the beginning of his college training, he was recognized both for his originality and his classical style. In the summer of 2003, he had the opportunity to present his collection at the Aim com Moi boutique. With this, doors began to open: a sales network developed inMontreal, and other centers,Torontoamong them. Dinh Bá can now take pride in holding an esteemed position in the world of fashion, and truly holds his own among many renowned design houses.

Eve Gravel

Fall-Winter 2012-2013 collection
This season, designer Eve Gravel shows winter who’s boss with an all-new collection that is as cozy as it is sexy and sassy! Presenting a fashion-forward take on a woodsman style, knits, fur accents and wool in contrasting colours are converted into casual pieces, from sweaters and ponchos to oversized coats and sleeveless vests. Cool shades like cream, navy blue and black fuse with silvery gray and ochre while loose garments mix with more fitted styles!

From the outset, Eve Gravel’s collections have been inspired by her travels, music and street fashion, reflecting the designer’s signature duality. Sometimes feminine, sometimes tomboy – like the designer herself- each season’s collections showcase pieces of retro and contemporary inspiration.
 

Martin Lim

 
MARTIN LIM is the meeting of two cultures, two worlds, but mainly the fusion of two designers who proved themselves on a national and international level, they are Danielle MARTIN & Pao LIM.

Besides winning prestigious national and international awards, Martin and Lim are devoted designers who gained valuable experience while working with internationally renowned designers such as Christian Lacroix and Roland Mouret. Since the last few years, they perfected their knowledge about the North American market while collaborating with well established Canadian companies.

MFW brought lots to see to its viewers, from gallery presentation to theatrical demonstration to the traditional runway show followed by a standing ovation.  Designers have a lot to win by working with MFW, they truly go above and beyond to try and fulfill the designers need to ensure that its vision is carried through. More then once they performed full set changes in between shows to accommodate the presentations.  The staff was very proficient and professional, they made everything run seamlessly. The only disappointing part for me was that it didn’t run longer, 4 days just weren’t enough! All in all Bravo Montreal for making me a fan and wanting to come again!

There ware 3 shows that blew me away, DUY was the first and it stayed in my mind for the rest of the week. The collection was absolute sophistication, from the cuts, the colors, to the fabrics and constructions. Coming from a tailoring background, I can truly appreciate when a designer takes details into consideration.

I had been looking forward to the Télio Show all week and it did not let me down. For those of you who are not familiar with Télio, it’s a nation wide competition for Fashion students. Each year, schools from across Canada are sent a theme and a selection of fabrics from the textile company Télio. 25 finalists are chosen to come to Montréal and compete for 5 scholarship prizes. This year the theme was Rouge + red. All 25 pieces brought something to the competition. It’s a wonderful way to highlight the new talents in Canada. I was able to speck to one of the winners backstage, Mitchell Stuart Gilroy, form the Centre for Arts and Technology.  He was telling me how he spent many months working on one garments, no wonder he received the prize for Technical Mention. The dress was made so it could be completely unzipped to fit the need of the wearer.

The last Show of the week took it all; it was a partnership between 3 different designers (Anastasia Lomonova, LYN par Jocelyn Picard, UNTTLD). The first showed long black gowns of silk crape and chiffon with accents of leather.  It was followed by a full knitted line of unconventional silhouettes and cuts. The last designer showed fur and chains in a ready to wear line. The entirety of the show as very well themed and extremely theatrical with a grand finally of ripping the back screen to revel a wall of light.

Pull on a flannel and dig out your old Doc’s. The 90’s is the way for fall. Sulking down the runway at Mercedes-Benz fashion week, a bit of grunge and a touch of feminine sophistication ran frequent through many collections.

Rebecca Taylor’s collection screamed grunge, although it was not without a few sweeter elements.  Movement was everywhere. Flowy fabrics were matched fitted pieces that somehow floated down the runway, accentuated by simple pumps or tough utility booties. Chunky knits and copious layers added to the 90’s style of the collection, but the careless hair and simple make-up really topped it off. Lined-eyes, pale skin and barely pinked lips brought about the waiflike air common of the era.

To reference the era, think mismatched, chaotic and understated. Copious layers make this look appropriate for any season. Think combat boots with a floral dress, layered blacks and greys and over sized sweaters. For something easy, try a floor skimming dress topped with a jean jacket. Stylish, yet slightly dishelved, it looks effortless. Accentuate with rips and tears to rough up your style. Add dark-lined eyes, a cozy, plaid flannel and a could-care-less attitude to finish the look.

February is Eating Disorder Awareness month. All over the globe different organizations are doing their part to spread the message that this illness is becoming more widespread and something needs to be done. The fashion industry has had a reputation for using young, thin models on the catwalk and in print; and many feel this is a direct cause for the rise in eating disorders around the world. The issue though, is a lot bigger than that and we need to be aware of out own attitudes toward thinness.
 

 
We need to change what is desired in the fashion industry and we need to value each model as a human being, not as a mannequin that can be molded into be the perfect size. Modeling, as with any profession, has standards that you are judged by and a large part of someone’s success is based on how well they fit those standards. Like any other profession, there are those who break that mold and show that you can pursue your goals despite being told you will never be good enough. The fashion industry is not alone in this, but those struggling can’t just take a course to get ahead, their careers are based solely on their appearances. This pressure to fit an impossible mold in a short time frame (2-5yrs), leads models to taking drastic measures that leads to weight loss addiction and long term physical and mental health issues. Women and men, yes even men, with eating disorders are unfortunately in every facet of life nowadays. They are lawyers, doctors, accountants, travel agents, and they are struggling in silent. We need to start making changes and taking notice.
 

 

Lately there has been a bit of a phenomena with the rise of the “plus” size model. Being a thin person myself, someone who has always been a twig and often ridiculed for it,
I experienced bullying and was told my body wasn’t good enough; I was always just too skinny. With the current environment of “anti-thin” us NATURALLY thin women are being vilified, clearly none of us ever eats and we are the reason for everything wrong in the world.
Eating disorders and obesity are simultaneously on the rise and as a culture we need to re-evaluate how we see our bodies and the food we eat. The “ideal size” should not exist; any woman of any size who is healthy should be celebrated and welcomed into the industry. When you see your body as the enemy, a thing that needs to be controlled, and food as a weapon, you’re setting yourself up for failure and eventually the pain of never loving yourself for who you are and not what you ‘should’ look like.
 

 
A few weeks ago I was sitting with my beautiful best friend, an amazing fellow model who has struggled with an Eating disorder for years. We came up with the idea for this Photo shoot, in honor of Eating disorder awareness and the theme this year “Celebrating your Size”. It was perfect timing considering the discussions we were having. Everything was planned and executed in under a week and we were so lucky to have had such an amazing team of people come together.
 

 

We involved models that have suffered through, or are continuing to struggle with, an eating disorder. We had models, whose family members and friends are struggling, and we had models who just wanted to show their support and show that there are so many different body types in this world, and with confidence and a positive attitude they are all beautiful.

I’m hoping that this will open a few minds, there needs to be a change and the only way to start that is to speak up and start a discussion. Be proud of your body!

I’m in suits a lot – away from work I go casual. I’m a jeans and t-shirt girl deep down, but I always find a way to make it mine, usually with accessories. Right now its J Brand dark denim, Steve Madden cowboy inspired scruffy looking tall boots. I’m also a comfy pyjama fan ….. that would be my other go to outfit
 
 

What’s your go-to store?

 
In a last minute shopping frenzy, ‘gotta have a great dress’ – I always strike gold at BCBG.
 
 

What advice would you give to young women/men trying to find their personal style?

 
If it doesn’t feel like its true to you, its not. Know yourself – and your body. And something that’s well made, well tailored makes all the difference.

On girls trips, we do load up on mags and read them, sure. I love to pull ideas/inspiration and get an understanding for putting looks together. What colours are hot, what length are the skirt hemlines going to be this season? But they’re ‘fantasy’ to me – not necessarily something to emulate.
 
 

What was your favourite style decade? (grunge, hippy, 40’s, …)

 
I am loving Boardwalk Empire on HBO – so 30s style inspires me.

Its a west coast city – with a vibe that’s relaxed, easy and laid back. I love people watching downtown, I think a lot of the professional women in this City look phenomenal. The men? I love a guy who looks effortless. Not too pretty. Good shoes, a cool watch …… You got me!
 
 

Do you find Vancouver’s style different from other cities you’ve been to or lived in?

 
I grew up in Germany – I’d say men in particular in Europe take more risks with what they wear. Only been there twice, but I have to say, in Montreal the guys really step it up too.
 
 

 
 

Define the word style? Or What does the word style mean to you?

 
Style is so personal. I think for me its feeling like they way I’m put together reflects who I am and how I’m feeling on that given day. I’m a bit goofy and I love bright colour – so that’s certainly part of my ‘style’. I think it tells people a bit about me. Bold, fun, happy, adventurous.
 
 

Define fashion? Or what does fashion mean to you?

 
Fashion to me is what you find on the pages of Vogue. In all honesty – high end Fashion doesn’t have a lot to do with my every day – but I do admire it! And I marvel at how its always changing – like my job Nothing is the same day to day. Which I love.
 
 

 
 

Have you ever felt pressured to look a certain way? Why? What did you do about it?

 
Sure. I think it would be tough to find a woman who doesn’t feel some level of pressure to look good. I feel pressure to walk a line between being a young woman on air, relevant and ‘fashion forward’ but because its news – there has to be credibility. Its a tough one to keep in balance. Hair is the same thing – I have to maintain a conservative look on air – that’s not “real life” me. I’m a ponytail girl in my world.
 
 

Do you think fashion and trends are affected by media? Is this a good thing?

What do you think about the Yoga craze in Vancouver?

 
I contribute to it. I dig that our city wants to be active and athletic. Let those critics say what they want. I love the outdoorsy look, at the right time, in the right place.
 
 

Would we ever find you out for lunch in yoga pants?

 
After a run, or a yoga class – at a low key lunch spot, yes, you would. Maybe with a toque on. I’m a proud Canadian girl.
 
 

 
 

How would you describe your style?

 
Casual chic. Classic without being conservative. Not trendy – I never do “trends” well. I like unique pieces. I have a collection of necklaces and earrings that were my Grandma’s that are timeless. A European immigrant, she had impeccable taste. I honour her by wearing her pieces on big days. And when I do I always get asked “Where did you get that??” Overall, I am about well picked out basics, fun layers, a great jacket or bag or accessory. I believe in spending a little extra on the staples and saving on the ‘seasonal’ pieces. But don’t get me wrong, I love a little glam, hot heels or a cocktail dress that make me feel like a million bucks is a worthy purchase.

I couldn’t give any better advice than Coco Chanel: “A girl should be two things: classy and fabulous.”

I read fashion magazines online. I mostly gravitate towards Vogue or Harper’s Bazaar. I’m not gonna lie – when I was a teenager I loved the trashiness of Cosmopolitan and I turned out OK i think!
 
 

What was your favourite style decade? (grunge, hippy, 40’s, …)

 
I love the 60′s Mad Men era. Women were ultra feminine and showed off their curves.

Jillian Harris: Practical Style, Elegant Design

 
 
We talk to the young Interior Designer and former Bachlorette contestant about her laid back, practical approach to style, being on TV and future plans with her Design business.
 
 

 
 
Jillian Harris fits a lot of the cliches of a petite energetic women; firecracker, spitfire, even bundle of energy. Cliches aside Jillian has a great work ethic and pure artistic talent that ensures her a status as a bona fide designer and not a “celebrity designer” who’s popularity is based on fame and not talent.
 
 

 
 
Born in Peace River, Alberta, Canada Jillian was educated at BCIT for interior design and has a design resume that includes Cactus Club Café, Browns Restaurant & Bar, former Bachelorette Ali Fedotowsky and most recently Jillian designed the rail car interiors for the Rocky Mountaineer train.
 
Being on the Bachelorette has definitely boosted Jillian’s name recognition, but Jillian told me she would be just as happy opening a design boutique where she resides in Kelowna BC and focus on her design work away from the spotlight and still feel fulfilled. Starting on January 10th Jillian’s new TV project is on HGTV’s  Handyman Challange with fellow hosts/judges Mike Holmes, Scott McGillivray and Bryan Baeumler. Jillian plays referee, time keeper and in some cases comic relief to help cut tensions during the building and judging stages.
 
 

 
 
Jillian has a laid back approach to her personal style, she likes her denim and plaid with a nice boot to complete her look. Always on the move, being comfortable is a necessity for Jillian and plays a big part in how she approaches her style for the day. Layering is important to Jillian`s style, she likes to layer her button up’s with Tee’s a sweater or a light weight jacket, giving her a few different looks with one outfit through out the day. Personally I found her style ‘approachable’, she didn’t have on a lot of  unnecessarily expensive items to show she has money or is a celebrity which may put herself on another level, but instead approaches her style with common sense and practicality. Stores like Aritzia, Yummy Kim(NYC), Urban Outfitters and Frye Boots are staples for Jillian.
 
That being said Jillian does have a sweet spot for high Fashion, saying she likes to go for a Jackie ‘O’ look when dressing formal because the former First Lady had such an eye for classic, timeless style. Jillian feels if she emulates Jackie’s style she will always be in best form with a simple elegant look that will always turn heads.
 
 

 
 
Whats in store for Jillian in 2012 … even Jillian doesn’t know. Jillian say’s she likes to think in 3-5 month blocks a likes not knowing where her life is heading and welcomes the adventures that pop up along the way. She tells me that there are some local projects she is working on, still a little “Hush,Hush” but we will update when she can say more.

Greedy Productions is the brainchild of Creator, Executive Producer and Co-Host of “The Electric Playground,” and “Reviews on the Run“, Victor Lucas. He is a video game television pioneer and his first original TV series, “The Electric Playground,” hit the airwaves in 1997 and is now a daily TV series seen coast to coast in Canada and the US.   I am a huge nerd myself and have watched this show for years to keep up with the art and tech of the gaming and movie industries. I wanted to showcase this incredible cast and find out how they keep their style fresh when having to shoot daily segments.   With the help of Vancouver photographer: Todd Duncan, Stylist: Claudia Da Ponte and Make-up Artists: Ana Viseroiu - Emily Cheng we produced a James Bond like theme and dolled up the cast in gowns and tuxedos.   A special thanks to Marcy Lavoie for helping me co-ordinate the shoot and AF writer Kari B and Chelsea Leach for helping Claudia.   EP Daily and Reviews on the Run airs daily at 6pm and again at 11pm on CityTV.

Victor Lucas   In the early 90′s I was an actor that was waiting tables and also waiting patiently for someone to notice how great I was. That wasn’t proceeding as quickly as I was hoping so in late 1994, I had a mini-quarter-life crisis and dreamed up and wrote down the three-page concept for The Electric Playground. This was to be a TV series and website that would cover video games and the culture around them in the way that I personally would like to be informed and entertained. Videogames were already an enormous industry and I had a hunch that if we could launch the site and show, there would be thousands of people with similar interests that would dig our coverage. Through a lot of hard work from a lot of really talented people that has turned out to be true and now in 2012, I’m happy to say that The Electric Playground and its spin-off sister show, Reviews on the Run, are the most widely watched TV programs covering videogames in the world.     Do you consciously dress for your segments? (wear a certain brand to create a “look or character” for yourself)   I like button up shirts with military styling–epaulets are my friend–and funky t-shirts that have some unique art on them. I love picking up t-shits in Japan. I also dig a wide assortment of jackets and sneakers for every season imaginable because we shoot outdoors a ton. I don’t really dress for character but I certainly have been influenced by characters like Indiana Jones, Han Solo, James Bond, you know…the nerd kings!     Does fashion or style play a role whatsoever outside the show? (Be honest this is about getting to know you)   Sure, I like to look decent when I’m not working. I don’t spend a fortune on clothes but I’ve learned over the years how to pick up pretty good looking pieces that work on me. I shopped outside of my comfort zone for a pair of boots and some skinny khakis and wool pants in Barcelona last year and I love them! But mostly in Vancouver I’m in jeans, t-shirt, button up shirt, jacket and a satchel.     Is there anyone in your industry that you admire for their style?   What I admire about the video game industry is how much style has started to play an important role in the lives of game creators. When I started The Electric Playground, the guys making games (and it was almost always guys) wore shorts and sometimes clean t-shirts, so it’s great to walk around dev studios now and see so many fashionable looking people. I really started noticing this first in Montreal but game development is hip and super desirable work now, so studios everywhere are filled with cool looking people. In television, I always have dug the way that George Stroumbolopolous has styled himself. Black jeans, sneakers, cowboy shirts, rock Ts, tattoos and then the guy sits down and has a great convo with anyone from a rock star to a tech entrepreneur to a politician. He makes it look easy and he’s always cool.     Are there any gaming characters that you think have really good style? Guys or girls.   I think Sam Fisher and Ezio Auditore both kick ass with their styles for different reasons. Ubisoft knows how to dress their characters well. I also always dig the way that Capcom makes their Resident Evil casts look. Very hip. Probably the coolest outfit in games though is John Marston’s in Red Dead Redemption. Love that character! There are two actors that have tremendous style: Daniel Craig and Brad Pitt. I always notice what those guys choose to wear on screen and in real life. Stylish dudes. Especially dug Craig’s clothes in The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo!

Scott C Jones   I got started about 10 years ago by writing game reviews for websites in my spare time. I never made 1 cent at it, but I started going to game events in New York, where I started to meet industry people. I talked about games with these people–my favorite subject in the world after candy–and suddenly I was meeting more people, and suddenly people were paying me for my reviews, and THEN I met Victor Lucas. And the rest is history.     Do you consciously dress for your segments? ( wear a certain brand to create a “look or character” for yourself)   Not really. Mostly I try my best not to dress like Victor. We shop at the same stores. We both have a weakness for plaid. We’ve shown up to shoot Reviews on the Run dressed identically on more than one occasion. We laugh about it, but it’s always kind of embarrassing. If I see a shirt that I like at a store, I think, ”Hmm. Would Victor wear this?” If the answer is “yes,” I won’t buy it. Unless it’s really, really cool. Then I’ll buy it and show it to Vic and tell him that I have firsties. These days what I do is this: I’ll buy an expensive key item at Harry Rosen, like a sport coat, then pair it with some cheap stuff from Urban Outfitters or Levis. Then I’ll mix in some sort of vintage eyeglass frame. High end meets low end; highbrow meets lowbrow. Voila: that’s the extent of the thought that goes into my style.     Does fashion or style play a role whatsoever outside the show? (Be honest this is about getting to know you)   Not really. I wear the same boring thing all the time: t-shirt (white or black, always plain, never any writing or designs; I hate that crap), New Balance sneakers, leather jacket. That’s it. Even on my birthday, this is how I will dress. When I lived in New York and I started doing morning television, I always wore jackets and ties. I wore jackets and ties mostly because: 1. I didn’t know what else to wear, and 2. I felt like it was an easy way to look more mature in an industry where most people always wore beach shorts and baseball caps to events. I think I’m the one who first pushed for us to wear suits on Reviews. We started off doing it solely as a year-end holiday thing, but when Reviews went daily, we kept the suits. I’m glad we did. I like wearing the suits. My suits are all expertly tailored Ermenegildo Zegna suits. I actually have a “guy” at Zegna/Harry Rosen named Javier here in Vancouver who takes care of me, and makes sure my suits always look good. Vic and I aren’t kids anymore, so we shouldn’t look like kids. Games have grown up as a medium, and we’ve grown up with games, and the way we dress should reflect that.     Is there anyone in your industry that you admire for their style?   Not really. Shaun Hatton, I guess. He has such a distinctive look; I never see anyone who dresses like him. If I look to anyone, it’s to Conan O’Brien or Letterman or Fallon. I admire those guys and wish I had a fraction of their talent. If I can’t be as   talented as those guys, the least I can do is look as put-together as I can for our show.     Are there any gaming characters that you think have really good style? Guys or girls.   Most video game characters dress like total douchers. Examples: Jason Fleming in Shadow Complex and Nathan “RAD” Spencer in Bionic Commando. See what I mean? Douchers.

Miri Jedeikin   I discovered a love of writing and telling stories at a young age and tried my hand at journalism at age seventeen with an article on the myths of modeling (something I was doing at the time). What started out as a school assignment ended up getting published by the Montreal Gazette and then went on to be syndicated across the United States and Canada in a slew of newspapers. It made me realize that I had a voice and that my ideas were compelling enough to develop and share. I went on to study Cultural Studies and Critical Theory at McGill where my love of all things popular culture really flourished and deepened. After graduating I moved to LA and NY and tried my hand at PR and Brand Management in the fashion industry, but quickly realized that the corporate world (and the fashion world) was not for me and that my interests were better served by new media. So, I got involved in online news communities and got a job as an online content editor at Current.com where I began curating and shaping the way online media was being consumed. It was an exciting time, both for me professionally and for new media. I started doing viral hosting using webcams, and posting commentaries and little tidbits on Current and other websites including a blog I had at the time. As the fates would have it, Victor Lucas had been searching for an LA host and producer and was recommended to check out my work by a mutual friend. I guess he liked what he saw because here I am, 3 years later, a happy fixture on the Greedy team! Being on EP and RoTR has taught me practically everything I know about hosting and producing and I pinch myself every day – I have the coolest job on the planet and I am so thankful to get to do what I love in the company of incredible people.     Do you consciously dress for your segments? ( wear a certain brand to create a “look or character” for yourself)   We shoot daily TV which means as hosts, we’re in front of the camera a LOT. In light of that, I try to wear dynamic separates that look good on camera but that don’t overpower my interview subjects or the segment itself. I wear a lot of basics that can easily be diversified with some vintage pieces thrown in, and I usually get more adventurous with my accessories. I definitely dress up my makeup and accessories for red carpets more than I would a daytime interview in someone’s office, so context does play a role in my on-camera wardrobe. I live in comfy, stylish T shirts, Acne jeans and great flat boots and/or sandals depending on the season. We shoot a lot on the go and outdoors and even though I live in LA, there are still seasons to consider, so I’ll wear a fun scarf and structured coat for winter and maybe a vintage dress with sandals in the summer. I’m 5’10 soaking wet, so I try to stay away from anything with a heel as most people I interview are my height or shorter (everyone in Hollywood is tiny!!). The bottom line for my on-camera wardrobe is ease, elegance, and simplicity!     Does fashion or style play a role whatsoever outside the show? (Be honest this is about getting to know you)   Absolutely. I may like Star Wars and Space Invaders, but I am a girl, and growing up with older sisters meant monthly subscriptions to pretty much every major fashion magazine on the market. Fashion has been a huge influence in my life, so much so that I even worked in the industry for a few years in New York and LA before I got my start as a journalist. My style icons seem to all originate in the 70s, but what can I say, I’m a sucker for a YSL pantsuit and the golden age of American Sportswear! I love old photos of Lauren Hutton, Bianca Jagger, and Faye Dunaway and Charlotte Rampling.     Is there anyone in your industry that you admire for their style?   Being the LA field producer and correspondent means that I cover film and television more than any other discipline, so there are loads of style icons for me to choose from right here in Hollywood. Right now, I have my eye on Emma Stone, Lake Bell, Malin Ackerman and Zoe Saldana. She’s been criticized for it, but the elegance and simplicity with which Angelina Jolie dresses is right up my alley.     Are there any gaming characters that you think have really good style? Guys or girls.   My favorite gaming character when it comes to style has to be Bayonetta. She rocks catsuits, beehive-ish hairdos AND glasses. It doesn’t get more nerdy/badass than that. I also think Lara Croft revolutionized what a sexy woman in video games actually looks like. She’s been maligned for being too objectified and overtly sexual, but I think any woman with a braid down to her butt and two guns in her holster is definitely someone I want in my corner. I think Rooney Mara’s Lisbeth Salander from the Dragon Tattoo is going to definitely influence female fashion. She looks like a total bad-ass and totally vulnerable all at once.

Shaun Hatton   After graduating college with a Journalism education, I worked as a contributing writer to Chart Magazine and a few other local music publications, gradually spending more time away from music in favour of games coverage. I became a contributor to the games culture website 4 Color Rebellion and started my own games website, Toronto Thumbs, where I wrote about games and related geeky pop culture goodness for several years before joining the team at The Electric Playground (and later, Reviews on the Run).     Do you consciously dress for your segments? ( wear a certain brand to create a “look or character” for yourself)   My style of dress is no accident. I carefully determine which clothing would be most appropriate in each interview or event situation. The surprising thing, though, is the versatility of the combo of a dress shirt, tie, jeans, and Chuck Taylors. So I wear that combo a lot. I really like Ben Sherman ties despite their apparent magnetic attraction toward bits of fruit salad, yogurt, etc.   Does fashion or style play a role whatsoever outside the show? (Be honest this is about getting to know you)   Yes. Even when shopping for groceries, I try to look decent. The only difference between my on-air appearance and my off-duty appearance is that while I’m off duty, I am usually wearing one of my 15 different Electric Six shirts. I listen to their music a lot to get pumped for TV. It works!     Is there anyone in your industry that you admire for their style?   There is a journalist in the industry, John Teti, who also understands the importance of looking good. He also wears dress shirts, ties, jeans, and sneakers – only his are usually Adidas if I’m not mistaken. Speaking of Adidas, one really stylish game developer is Maxime Beland, creative director at Ubisoft Toronto. He has a lot of cool Adidas stuff and a great smile. Are there any gaming characters that you think have really good style? Guys or girls. Travis Touchdown from No More Heroes, Leon Kennedy from Resident Evil 4, Mega Man, Falco Lombardi from Star Fox, Zelda from The Legend of Zelda series, and Samus from the Metroid series all have excellent style sense. People in games with no sense of style include the entire cast of Gears of War, Tom Nook from Animal Crossing, and Slippy Toad from Star Fox.

Steve Tilley   How I got started: I studied journalism at Grant MacEwan Univeristy in Edmonton and got a job at the Edmonton Sun right out of school, my first of many lucky career breaks. I went from covering general news to working the crime beat to doing entertainment reporting in Edmonton, then in 2005 I came out to Toronto as an entertainment writer for the Toronto Sun. Since then, I’ve shifted over to writing about technology, video games and other geeky goodness for the Sun Media family of newspapers and websites across Canada. I’m deeply fortunate to work for a media company that “gets” video games, and games have always been part of the Sun’s entertainment coverage. Being a reviewer for Reviews on the Run dovetails beautifully with my day job duties, and I’ve also done a fair bit of freelancing for magazines, ranging from New Music Monthly to Official Xbox Magazine.     Do you consciously dress for your segments? ( wear a certain brand to create a “look or character” for yourself)   I try to dress in a way that our audience can relate to. Vic and Scott wear suits for the in-studio segments, which definitely gives the show a nice touch of class, but for our shoots on location I tend to dress in what I guess could best be described as nerd casual. It may not always be pretty, but it’s me. While we try not to wear overt brands or logos on the show, I do like to wear subtly geeky or game-themed T-shirts when the opportunity presents itself. I love it when people comment on my shirts via e-mail or Twitter. I’m still waiting for someone to notice my Miskatonic University tee, but that might be too hardcore nerdy for anyone to pick up on.     Does fashion or style play a role whatsoever outside the show? (Be honest this is about getting to know you)   As anyone who has ever met me can attest, my fashion fluency is minimal at best. I have the luxury of working in a fairly casual office environment, and while I clean up well when the situation calls for it, my style outside the show is very similar to my style on the show. I really need to find a very patient personal guru who can help boost my fashion literacy. I’m open to offers!     Is there anyone in your industry that you admire for their style?   In Japan, being a video game developer carries a lot more prestige than it does here. Some game designers there are treated like rock stars, and many of them dress the part, too. Tomonobu Itagaki (Ninja Gaiden, Dead or Alive) comes to mind, though he tends to always wear the same leather jacket, T-shirt, skinny jeans and dark glasses. But he definitely owns that look!     Are there any gaming characters that you think have really good style? Guys or girls.   Nathan Drake always manages to make his particular kind of neo-Indiana Jones attire look great, no matter how sweat stained or shot up his clothes get. Heck, in Uncharted 3 he was even rocking a suit for a while. And Adam Jensen from Deus Ex: Human Revolution dresses like the sci-fi bad-ass he is. The game’s publisher even released a line of clothing based on fashions found in the game — that’s not something you see every day.

Bomb Girls: 40′s fashion brought back to Mainstream.

Canadian productions do not often get the same attention as American or European ones do, they tend to be over looked at times for an action packed, explosion filled show with little story and all the budget spent on production values and not on the story itself. What I have always loved about shows conceived and produced in Canada is the attention to the story and characters while maintaining a realistic look to their production.Bomb Girls is a perfect example of how good Canadian made Movies, Mini Series and TV shows can be and how a well written and researched show doesn’t need out of control budgets or guns and explosions to draw in viewers.’Bomb Girls’ is a story revolving around 5 key characters in the Victory munitions factory during World War II and is a series that recounts the combined stories from the Ajax Dil plant and the Scarborough General Engineering Plant.An estimated 250,000 women worked in the factories during the war all while also raising their families and maintaing a home.

Bomb Girls costume designer Joanne Hansen has done an amazing job at capturing the different social back grounds of the characters and the fashion styles they represents. The wardrobe in this series helps put the viewer into this WW II era and as this is a character driven series, not built on special effects, wardrobe plays such an important role.The attention to detail when doing a period piece is what can make or break a production and when done right it can help set the tone as well as give the actors a valuable tool to work into the make up of their character. So I was not surprised when watching the first episode screener how much attention Joanne and her team put into the costumes worn by all the cast, not just the main characters.

Meg Tilly as Lorna Corbett

Meg Tilly is a veteran Actress of film and television and fits the role of factory Matron Lorna Corbett very well. Lorna’s after hours style is that of a women who works by day and runs a house hold by night. With her husband paralyzed and two sons off fighting and a daughter working as a nurse, Lorna is not one to dress fancy and splurge of clothes, but with a steady paycheque coming in, things may just change.Meg with help from her wardrobe brings Lorna to life and you root for this often oppressed housewife to open up and live a happy life again.

Jodi Balfour as Gladys Witham

Jodi Balfour plays Gladys, the wealthy daughter of Rollie Witham who owns a Supermarket Empire. Gladys has a some what reckless zest for life and has the fearless attitude that comes with money.With her mother trying to marry her off so she doesn’t disgrace the family Gladys sees the war as an escape from her WASP family and relishes her job at the munitions factory. By day Gladys wears the jumpsuit by night the clothes of a rich girl as she explores the new world of the lower class seeking a reprieve from an oppressive family and suitor. Jodi fits into this role seamlessly and at times you can’t help but feel her character embodies the feeling of a lot of women of the era.

Ali Liebert as Betty McRae
	Ali Liebert was meant to play Betty McRae and delivers a note worthy performance. Betty is a scrappy farm hand from rural Saskatchewan who comes out East to escape the man dominated world she was born into and fits right into the hard working factory job.Betty’s style reflects a practical women who can dress for a day of shopping at the market or a night out at the bars looking for a soldier boy.

Charlotte Hegele as Kate Andrews

Charlotte Hegele brings a sweet charm to the role of Kate Andrews, an insecure abused daughter of a strict street preacher. Kate is on the run and befriends Betty McRae who lives across the hall in their boarding house and is her trainer at the munitions factory.Kate’s style reflects a quiet natured girl trained to blend in without sin by her father. Kate’s reserved dress and demeanor is in contrast to her beautiful voice, which helps lifts spirits of those around her.

Antonio Cupo as Marco Moretti
	Antonio Cupo plays Italian Canadian Marco Moretti who is in charge of import/export of all materials into the munitions factory.Marco’s wardrobe reflects his characters youth and ethnicity, he is the family breadwinner so his dress is not over the top but still retains a sense of style.

What are the top 3 must haves in your closet?

 
At the moment I’d say, a pair of dark denim boot cut Hudson jeans (stupidly comfortable), a blazer and good ol’ Frye boots.
 
 

What’s your go-to outfit?

 
A flowy printed silk mini-dress with boots or booties.
 
 

What’s your go-to store?

 
I find myself in Club Monaco more often than not. Pretty much everything in there is really, really nice. Club Monaco couture as I like to call it.
 
 

Who’s your favourite designer?

 
I’m not sure about one favourite but I love Chanel – classic chic.
 
 

Are you effected by trends? Are there any trends at the moment you love or hate?

 
I’m usually slightly hesitant with trends at first, it took me forever to start wearing skinny jeans because I was sure it was a trend that wouldn’t last. Faux fur is so hot right now and I think it can look great but I’m not sure it works on me. I did just purchase a pair of red jeans though, takes me back to the 90s. In a good way.

What advice would you give to young women/men trying to find their personal style?

 
I’d say, peruse fashion magazines for inspiration and observe people whose style you appreciate, then pick and choose styles and looks that speak to you. Go with your gut.
 
 

What’s your opinion of fashion magazines? Do you read them?

 
Fashion magazines are great as I said to draw ideas from – People Style Weekly and InStyle are ones I look to for inspiration from time to time.
 
 

What was your favourite style decade? (grunge, hippy, 40’s, …)

 
I love the 1920s. Everything looked so classy and elegant – double breasted suits, dropped waist dresses and ridiculously cool hats.
 
 

What does style mean to you?

 
To me, style is a way of expressing something about yourself. There’s an art to it, an inventiveness and a creativity. I find beauty in fashion and wearing beautiful clothes makes me feel good in my insides.
 
 

Do you dress for yourself or for others (ie: your man or work)?

 
I always appreciate someone noticing and commenting positively on something I’m wearing, but I think even if no one was around, I’d still want to wear nice things. It feels good to look good, let’s not mince words.
 
 

How has your personal style changed over the years?

 
When I was younger I wore a lot of hand-me-downs and sweatshirts with animals on them. In my teens I was SUPER conservative, I shopped at Jacob and Smart Set religiously. My go-to outfit circa 1999 was khaki pants and a collared shirt under a wool sweater. Then I went through a phase where I didn’t want to wear anything that could be construed as girly. I’m much more fashion conscious now than I’ve ever been; I’ve discovered the fun of it.

What do you think about the way men/women dress in this city? Do you find Vancouver’s style different from other cities you’ve been to or lived in?

 
I must say, there are a lot of girls in this city wearing Aritzia – not that there’s anything wrong with that! I’m a big fan myself. That and Lululemon of course. I would say there may be more diversity in terms of fashion in other cities I’ve been to.

Weellll I suppose if I was extremely hungry after yoga I’d grab some lunch in my yoga pants, but in general I don’t wear work-out clothes while I’m out and about. Although I wouldn’t begrudge someone else who felt they wanted to be comfortable!

On January 8th the finals will take place in LA and all the hard work that goes into competing in a pageant comes to a head. Starting on the 6th, Ayden has a busy couple of days of preliminaries and promotional events that will keep her busy until the finals on Sunday at 7pm on NBC. Now, one doesn’t just walk on to these pageants it takes dedication and a lot of preparation. On the Friday have a non stop day of rehearsal & preparation. Then on Saturday they go into their preliminary portion of the pageant with all the girls present. Each day starts off with the girls competing in swimwear, evening gown & interview. They will be judged on grace, poise, articulation & of course, beauty on the inside and out.
 

To get ready for the pageant Ayden has been working out daily. She begins each work out by biking 5 miles, running a 5k, then an hour of circuit training and ends with an hour and a half of yoga. She has also joined the West Coast Hwa Rang Do Academy to begin her practice in martial arts.

Ayden has really put her heart into her journey to become Miss California 2012 and has the right mind set with putting others ahead of her needs to help promote their causes and vision as well. The smart talented young women also continues her work as U.S. captain for Hear The World (run)  , an organization that was initially formed in the summer of 2011 in Los Angeles by Hear The World athlete & ambassador, Ayden Marie Vargas, who was diagnosed with Meniere’s disease & chronic vertigo in 2002. In simply a matter of months it grew from a Southern California team to a global running community! This was a natural extension as she already lends her voice to Here the World which boasts A-list celebrities from the movie,  music and sports world.

We all know Vancouver has a well established Fashion scene, from boutique shops to large fashion houses. Some brands however get passed over in the grand scheme of things because they are not always scene as a high end item or accessory. The two brands in this post are well established around the globe and produced in Vancouver. It has been an incredible year for two-time Gemini award winner Clé Bennett with his role alongside an A-list cast in one of the film festival circuit gems of 2010: “Barney’s Version”. Clé has a supporting role in the acclaimed dramatic feature film. The film’s A-list cast included Paul Giamatti and Dustin Hoffman. With industry recognition of his amazing performances Clé is realizing his dreams.

Following an outstanding performance in “Barney’s Version”, Bennett secured major roles on Global TV‘s “Shattered” and the new hit Showcase series “Lost Girl”. He has recently been featured on CBC‘s “Republic of Doyle”, A&E’s “Breakout Kings”, CTV‘s “The Listener”, and you can also catch him the upcoming feature film “Stag”.
Most recently, Clé can be seen starring in the fourth season of CTV’s hit drama Flashpoint, as Rafik Rousseau. This January makes his professional theatre debut on the Soulpepper stage, as he takes on the challenge of playing four characters in Ins Choi’s Kim’s Convenience, directed by Weyni Mengesha.

Guys, dressing up for a date or party this holiday season does not mean throwing on some khakis and a polo shirt. Standards need to be re-visited and updated to our modern style and fast paced lives. Wearing suits out on the town is a lost part of mens fashion and sorely missed. With the influence of shows like Jersey Shore and young celebrities wearing  jeans and T-shirts, thinking diamond necklaces makes it classy, men have become lazy. Our women still make an effort, they still put on a dress, heels and do their hair and make up. When did Ed Hardy or any similar brands become excepted and for that matter why?
 

It’s easy to take shortcuts and dress “like every one else” and I’m sure it feels like its not important to keep up with or dress in the most up to date fashion, but nothing says grown up and mature like a good suit. Here are a couple of looks that are classic easy to do and perfect for a date night or holiday party. Suits are as unique to your style as your hair cut.

Why black is good? Well as mentioned above its always in style. Every guy should own a black suit, this way you will always have a ‘go to outfit’ for a formal occasion without renting or god forbid, borrowing.

Grey suits are a great are almost as universal as ‘The Black Suit’ and also give a more casual look for certain occasions. The Grey Suit is an office standard but can look great on date night, the theatre and meeting your girls/guys parents. I mean come on look at these guys … are they not handsome in these suits.

The Tuxedo is an eye catching classic in the fashion world, much like the gown is to the opposite sex the Tux is the equalizer. In a Tux all men look good, feel good, and usually get the girl/guy. Now the Tux should not be worn lightly, its to be brought out for appropriate events so not to sully its good name. Charity events, the theatre, if your lucky enough … the oscars but never a wedding unless your in the wedding party, its there day not yours. These types of events ensure the Tux still holds that special place as top of Mens Fashion.

Like your Suit or Tux, Overcoats vary from color and fit to fabric and cut. Try to remember that Overcoats should be functional as well as stylish, and you should base your sizing on the clothing you will be wearing underneath and not on your usual clothing size.

In the four years that Jacob has been working professionally he has been fortunate to work with actors Thandie Newton, Aaron Ashmore, Lucy Hale, Ty Olsson John Cusack, Lyndsy Fonseca, Scott Patterson, Dan Byrd, Adhir Kalyan, Lindsey Shaw, Patrick Wilson, Jessica Biel, Brian Bloom, Bradley Cooper, Maury Sterling, Adrien Brody, Michael Ealy, Billy Ray Cyrus and Liam Neeson to name a few.  He sincerely feels it has been a privilege and has enjoyed working and learning from all of them.

Jacob has been busy since he started acting professionally four years ago.  He has worked on the feature films “Day The Earth Stood Still” (2008), “2012” (2009), “Christmas in Canaan” (2009), “Smokin Aces 2: Assassin’s Ball” (2010), “Hot Tub Time Machine” (2010), “The A-Team” (2010) and “Wrecked” (2010).  On the small screen Jacob’s first television series was the CW Network’s “Aliens in America”

Favorite role to date was Dan Archer, a wise cracking, belittling, bullying antagonist in “Aliens in America.” He has also had recurring roles on the television series “SGU: Stargate Universe” and “V”.

Next up Jacob will be seen on the big screen in the latest installment of the Underworld saga: “Underworld Awakening.” He plays Officer Kolb, a rookie detective, paired with veteran Detective Sebastian (Michael Ealy).  They are given the task to get to the bottom of the Lycan/Vampire war that has brought humankind into the mix. “Underworld Awakening” will be released in theatres January 20, 2012.

- Not really effected by trends, I just like to wear what I think goes well together. Sometimes I hate fashion trends, othertimes I pick and choose what I like within each look. I don’t think I have ever fully worn a set look.

What advice would you give to young women/men trying to find their personal style?

- Whatever hits you when you first look at it. If you say “Yup, that looks great.” don’t question it, wear it.

What’s your opinion of fashion magazines? Do you read them?

- I just don’t read them. I only find out what’s in style by going into stores.

What was your favourite style decade? (grunge, hippy, 40’s, …)

- The 30′s I like the idea of wearing a well cut suit for everyday business.

What does style mean to you?

- It’s a bit of a reflection to your personality, but it doesn’t define who you are. It just gives people a taste of what they’re in for when they approach you.

Do you dress for yourself or for others (ie: your man or work)?

- Myself. If I don’t like a fashion that everyone is wearing, I won’t wear it. After all, I’m the one who needs to be comfortable.

How has your personal style changed over the years?

- Well, being a child I wore what my Mom dressed me in. Then I dressed like a kid through my teen years. Young adulthood – I wore what I wanted as I was tired of trying to keep up with what people thought looked good. It’s been an adaptive style.

What do you think about the way men/women dress in this city? Do you find Vancouver’s style different from other cities you’ve been to or lived in?

-It depends what section of the city you’re in, but I mostly find people are dressing hipster-trendy/artistic throw back to the 70′s. Not my personal style, but seems kinda cool. Vancouver is a little more laid back. You can get away with more here.

- Never

- Big time. It can be a good thing as it may spawn a good look, but mostly it’s all hype (and expensive).

Victoria’s first role and big break was in the feature film ‘What Lies Beneath’ with Harrison Ford and Michelle Pfeiffer. She has also appeared in ‘Good Luck Chuck’ and ‘Alien Vs Predator: Requiem’.

Most recently, she plays the lead role in the feature film ‘Comforting Skin’, released early in 2011, opposite Tygh Runyan. She plays Koffie, a complex young woman, who has a very unique relationship with her tattoo. The cast includes Philip Granger, Eugene Lipinsky, Paul Jarrett, Jane Sowersby and Jennifer Griffin and is directed by Derek Franson. Television roles have included ‘The L Word’, ‘Supernatural,’ the pilot for ‘Hiccups’ and numerous commercials.

Victoria has performed in numerous plays through out L.A. and Vancouver. Roles have included Honey in ‘Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf’; however, one of her most challenging roles was Chrissy, the naïve and troubled lead of ‘In the Boom Boom Room’. The training, both mentally and physically, was vigorous. The role dealt with sexual and physical abuse and Victoria had to learn to perform as a stripper. After receiving excellent reviews, the cast and crew were thrilled when Halle Berry attended the play while she was filming inVancouver.

If there’s something I like, I may incorporate it into my outfit. I’m all about mixing current trends with vintage styles.

I love anything with lace and I’m not a fan of the large knit doyley sweater/poncho look.

What advice would you give to young women/men trying to find their personal style?

I always had mixed feelings about which outfits to chose in the past and therefore would just copy the latest trend, and in doing that I wasn’t acknowledging my own tastes, so I always ended up looking awkward and uncomfortable. Take the time to get to know your likes/dislikes and what looks good on your body type and don’t be afraid to ask someone for help. Chose clothing that accentuates your essence and makes you want to get dressed every day.

I love them.

Yes.

What was your favourite style decade? (grunge, hippy, 40’s, …)

I’m currently working on a character from the early sixties where there were a lot of social movements going on and fashion traditions were being broken. It wad an exciting time for fashion.

What does style mean to you?

It’s a way of showing myself and being open in the world and it can also be a way of hiding myself in the world. I can make people believe anything I want them to believe about me through my style. It’s how I send messages to others, it’s a form of communication.

Do you dress for yourself or for others (ie: your man or work)?

I dress for myself and for men. I dress the way I want to be looked at, so it all depends on where I am and who I want looking at me. I have to feel good in what I’m wearing at all times.

Do you have any beauty or fashion tips you’d like to share?

I recently discovered hair elixir, it makes my hair shiny, smooth and silky and it smells wonderful.

How has your personal style changed over the years?

In the past, my style was very loud, lots of prints and accessories. Now my style is toned down, more simplistic and put together, it’s more feminine.

What do you think about the way men/women dress in this city?

I don’t think too much about it.

Do you find Vancouver’s style different from other cities you’ve been to or lived in?

It’s climate appropriate, athletic and casual.

Have you ever felt pressured to look a certain way?  Why?  What did you do about it?

Yes. Because I felt people would like me more or find me more attractive if I looked and behaved a certain way. Embraced my unique qualities that distinguish me. Once I did that, life got a lot better and people responded to me in a more positive way. The pressure was and is always brought on by myself.

Do you think fashion and trends are affected by media?

I believe media can dictate fashion/trends and having awareness of this is vital.

Is this a good thing?

It can take away from one’s individuality if you let it. I find it important to ground myself in amongst all of the media and not to lose sight of my own unique passions and desires. The more I stray from my intent, the more dangerous it can be.

What do you think about the Yoga craze in Vancouver?

It’s a good craze to have.

Would we ever find you out for lunch in yoga pants?

I’m always in work out gear. I     don’t drive and I love to walk. My favorite thing about Vancouver is that I can walk from one end of the city to the other in a couple of hours. I never tire of being active, this city condones that.

Athletic and laid back.

A vintage gold ring I bought from an older lady at a flea market.

RozeMerie’s life long dream to create the perfect back-drop to show case the Jacqueline Conoir / JAC line has been realized with the completion of this expansive Zen like environment. The vast space features, George Nelson lights, a custom designed art installation of LED lights and a video wall that pays homage to generations of fashion, film and youth rebels defining cultural change. The modern and sleek white lounge area is a great ‘hang out place’ prior to entering the spacious changing room with 14 foot drapes cascading from ceiling to floor.

The goal is to merge art and fashion, a passion of RozeMerie Cuevas’, the designer of both lines, through showcasing modern artists. The unveiling of the mural, by Hamish Todd a young, up and coming artist originally from Vancouver flown in from Paris, on the façade was one of the first of many collaborations to come. Most recently featured local artist at Jacqueline Conoir - Marion Landry ”The Firenze Collection.”

Synonymous with modern glamour, Jacqueline Conoir continues its reputation as Vancouver’s most celebrated brand showcasing urban looks and the latest trends for the modern woman and with the addition of the newly launched JAC line of edgy shapes and in your face attitude creates a minimalist look for the woman who likes to live life on her own terms.

The space recently hosted the Jacqueline Conoir & JAC Spring / Summer 2012 fashion show launch and also is a venue available for booking customized fashion events. The boutique is currently showcasing Fall “Fashion Style Scene” shopping events only until December 10th and will start up again in the Spring. Most recently, James wrapped an episode on the fourth season of Fox’s hit series “Fringe”. The seventh episode of the season (featuring James) airs in mid-November. James plays a character named Ned, who happens to hit on a girl the killer in the episode wants to get involved with. The killer tracks Ned down and their story unfolds.

Since booking his first role in “K19: The Widowmaker”, starring Harrison Ford and directed by Kathryn Bigelow, this young talent has been adding versatile credits to his acting resume. His other film credits include a supporting lead role in “Adam and Evil”, where he played a teen suspected of murder, and a lead in the independent feature, “The Bentley Box”, where he played a courier in charge of delivering a box with mysterious, deadly contents. James also honed his comedic craft in the short film “Bethany”, where he played an overzealous actor desperate to be cast in a role. On television, James also appeared on the hit CW series “Supernatural”, giving Jared Padalecki’s character Sam a rough time as a surly bartender.

James isn’t slowing down anytime soon: He is currently in the process of finalizing talent for the feature film entitled “Candyland”, based on the novel of the same name by award-winning author Elizabeth Engstrom and set to shoot in Louisiana this coming March/April. It is James’ first foray into producing and will be another starring vehicle for him. This project is six years in the making. James wants to be able to create his own work following the footsteps of many of the greats he admires, including Sylvester Stallone, Clint Eastwood and Michael Douglas.

A wide selection of dress shirts, a James Dean style long coat, and sweats for those lazy days.

What’s your go-to outfit?

Suit. Its classic and will never fail for a gentleman.

Wide variety. I like well-crafted cloths but they must be reasonable in price for what you receive. I don’t buy into the pay big money for a brand but you look ridiculous.  I will shop at any store I can find a great deal. Whether I’m at Mexx orValueVillage. They have some gems there!

I have to pick! There are too many greats.

Are you affected by trends? Are there any trends at the moment you love or hate?

Some trends I will adhere to but I prefer keeping it simple. Classic never goes out of style.

What advice would you give to young women/men trying to find their personal style?

Don’t be afraid to experiment with style. I did. I still have a lot to learn but it provided me with a greater sense of self. Fashion is incredibly important.

-I don’t regularly read any magazines but when I do pick up a fashion magazine I find myself fascinated.

A sense of self-confidence and expression.

That’s a funny question. I dress for myself on my down time, and for others for work. I’m an actor! I don’t get to choose what I want to wear.

Make sure you always have a great scarf.

Hasn’t changed at all. I always knew I preferred the classic suit look and when I’m doing chores the good old dependable T-shirt and jeans.

Never felt any pressure to look a certain way. I make myself look as good as possible  but for me because it makes me feel good. Although, who knows what I truly look like. I could be blowing it!

I like yoga but you’d never find me in those pants.  I don’t think I could pull them off.

It’s all dispensable. I’m not too attached to any of my clothes.

I grew up in a mountain town, so I’ve always identified with the snow/skate/surf culture. I think that’s affected my taste in clothing.

What advice would you give to young men trying to find their personal style?

Wear what makes you comfortable, and always get a woman‘s opinion.

What’s your opinion of fashion magazines? Do you read them?

I like the photography, but they could use more articles. I flip through one every so often.

What was your favourite style decade? (grunge, hippy, 40’s, …)?

I’m working on a film based in the 1930′s, and I’m diggin’ those outfits. Also, anything from the Old West.

What does style mean to you?

I guess it’s an extension of oneself and how one wants to be perceived.

Do you dress for yourself or for others (ie: your woman or work)?

I tend to dress for myself as much as possible, but sometimes I have no choice

Do you have any beauty or fashion tips you’d like to share?

I’m the wrong person to ask.

How has your personal style changed over the years?

Not a lot, although getting married has had an impact. I definitely own more dress shirts than I used to. My wife even got me a bow tie!

What do you think about the way men/women dress in this city? Do you find Vancouver’s style different from other cities you’ve been to or lived in?Weren’t we recently voted worst dressed?

I really don’t pay too much attention to it. I grew up in a small town where everyone dressed like each other, so Vancouver‘s style seems very eclectic. That’s not a bad thing.

Have you ever felt pressured to look a certain way? Why? What did you do about it?

Yes. Any time I go to an industry function. My wardrobe isn’t too extensive, so I usually resort to a few “go-to” items of clothing for the fancy events.

Do you think fashion and trends are affected by media? Is this a good thing?

Not only affected, dictated. I think we live in a society that is overly susceptible to the media’s influence. I don’t see that much harm in it though. As long as people remember to think for themselves every so often.

What do you think about the Yoga craze in Vancouver? Would we ever find you out for lunch in yoga pants?

Unless I was doing some sort of twisted character research for a role, probably not. It wouldn’t be a pretty sight. I don’t have anything against yoga, but it has become quite the fad.

All over the map.

RED CARPET QUESTIONS

How do you like to dress for the Red Carpet?

I think I tend to play things safe. I don’t think I could pull off some of the wacky outfits I’ve seen people wear on the red carpet, so I usually just go with your fairly standard suit.

Do you have a great Red Carpet story? ie: A designer dressed you? How you found the perfect dress? Etc.

A few years back, I walked the Red Carpet at TIFF for the world premiere of Jennifer’s Body. There were hundreds of screaming fans anxiously waiting for Megan Fox or Amanda Seyfried to arrive. I will never forget hearing one of the people yell “Who’s that?” referring to me, which resulted in someone else replying “Don’t worry…he’s just a nobody”. Guess I should’ve worn a nicer suit!

How do you like a woman to dress?

Nothing too fancy. I think there’s a lot to be said about keeping things simple.

Do you have any ‘beauty’/self care or fashion tips for men?

Beards have made a comeback. Facial hair is highly acceptable again!

Have you ever had a mani/pedi or gone for a facial? Why or why not?

Well I’m not gonna lie. I have, in fact, done both. Once. I wanted to see what all the fuss was about. Guys should pamper themselves once in a while too.

 Celeb Style – Rebecca Marshall

Rebecca Marshall is set to star and produce the docudrama “Life Tracker” in Los Angeles late November, 2011. The production is written and will be directed by Joe McClean. This past summer Rebecca joined a stellar cast starring Adam Sandler in the feature film entitled “I Hate You Dad” aka “Donny’s Boy”.  Rebecca joined superstars Susan Saradon, James Caan, Andy Samberg and Leighton Meester in the film shot in Cape Cod andBoston.  The feature films tells the story of a disagreeable father who moves in with his son before the son (Andy Sandberg) is about to get married.  Last seen on big screen in the extremely successful franchise SAW 3D with Tobin Bell (Jigsaw), Cary Elwes and Sean Patrick Flanery Rebecca welcomed the change from horror to comedy.

In her spare time when not traveling, Rebecca works on oil paintings, enjoys having game nights at home, reading and writing. You will most likely find her in a bookstore than a nightclub.  She loves working with people who inspire her and push her to do her best.  Rebecca heads up Moxie Lady Productions, which will be producing her next project.  Rebecca is an avid sports fan who played softball and tennis for years.

I love that lace is back in! It’s such a classic beauty look.

What advice would you give to young women/men trying to find their personal style?

Explore and play! You have to take risks and know that sometimes it might not work. Always feel confident in what you wear though. If you don’t feel comfortable than it’s probably not a good look for you.

What’s your opinion of fashion magazines? Do you read them?

I LOVE fashion magazines. Elle, Vogue and INStyle are my favourite magazines to read on the plane when I am traveling. It gives me insight on what’s going on in the fashion world.

What was your favourite style decade? (grunge, hippy, 40’s, …)

I am a big fan of the 40’s I believe that I was suppose to be born in that decade lol

What does style mean to you?

Style to me is like an art form. It’s a form of expression for people. I believe you don’t need money to have style. Just creativity and confidence.

Do you dress for yourself or for others (ie: your man or work)?

I always dress for myself. Because if I don’t feel positive or confident in what I am wearing then neither will the person I am wearing it for.

Do you have any beauty or fashion tips you’d like to share?

Never over do it.

How has your personal style changed over the years?

I have definitely gotten out of my safety box. I use to wear a lot of black and keep it safe. Now I bring in a lot of color and accessorize which I have learned to work with.

What do you think about the way men/women dress in this city? Do you find Vancouver’s style different from other cities you’ve been to or lived in?

Vancouver has a great style. I think that each city that I have lived in brings something different to the table. Los Angeles is very casual and accessorized, New York has that all walks of life for fashion and Paris brings such an essence of class that you can put on anything your in the mood for and wear it out.

Have you ever felt pressured to look a certain way? Why? What did you do about it?

I definitely think there is a lot of pressure to look a certain way. As much as I love fashion magazines I do disagree with the way they airbrush everything and give young girls the idea that this is how they must look. I think you have to be yourself and love your body and look and that will project to others. I never let the pressure of being a certain way get to me. This is who I am take it or leave it.

Do you think fashion and trends are affected by media? Is this a good thing?

Yes and no. I do think celebrities inspire fashion trends to a certain extent but really the designers are the ones who inspire everything from the start.

Absolutely! My yoga pants have also become my errand pants, lunchtime pants and daytime lounge pants lol

Very casual and comfortable but trendy.

Hmmm that’s tough because I am a bit of a chameleon when it comes to fashion. I love to change it up and try everything. But I try to always keep it looking classy and effortless.

Often referred to asCanada’s “Queen of the Red Carpet,” fashion is a big part of Cheryl Hickey’s every day life. Whether she’s shooting the show from theTorontobased studios or hoping on a plane to LA for the Oscars, Cheryl is very hands on regarding what frocks she chooses to wear.

Recently in Vancouver for “ET Canada: Live,” we caught up with Cheryl to discuss all things style.

AF: So what is your sense of style, and what designer do you like for comfort and what designer do you like for dressing up with all the glitz and glam?

 

C: I don’t exactly have one designer that I love. I’m not that girl. Like every woman, your body changes so much, I’ve gone from 125 lbs to almost 200 when I was pregnant so I’ve gone through every gamut of every style really. But I love boho-chic, I love that look. It’s not something I can wear everyday on the show. I have my own personal style that I kind of like. I enjoy and appreciate certain designers like Stella McCartney and people like that. And then we’ve got some fantastic Canadian designers. I love Obakki, I love wearing their stuff. Their stuff is just so original and it’s interesting. And I know those are total separate things, but it all depends on my mood. It’s really how I dress.

 

AF: What are you wearing today?

 

C: I am wearing some beautiful Ron White shoes and they are ridiculously comfortable. I am wearing two pairs of tights because it is very cold and I am wearing a couple pairs of G.A.P. thermals underneath, and this great sweater by Moon.

 

AF: What is your favorite celebrity look?

 

C: I like Jennifer Aniston’s style. I like Gisele Bundchen’s style. I love Elle Macpherson’s style. That’s the boho-chic look. In terms of cocktail looks, I like Olivia Wilde. I think she comes up with some really interesting dresses on the red carpet. Stunning girl.

 

 

AF: What’s your favourite event on the West coast you have done this past year?

 

C: My favourite event that I have done, definitely this, this is neat, this is great. I mean it’s a first for us so it feels really special. And everyone here is so welcoming and so warm. It’s been crazy busy and it’s been a wild ride, but it’s been tonnes of fun.

 

AF: What is most important to you when it comes to style?

 

C: Comfort. You want to look good, we all do but if I don’t feel comfortable, good and comfortable in what I am wearing, then I can’t project, it just feels like the clothes are wearing me and I can’t pull it off. Something that is comfortable and hot and fun, then I feel really good, but it has to be comfortable. Comfort is a big big thing!

There’s these pair of Jimmy Choos that I wore to the Oscars last year and worn them many times since, not only because they look good, but they are really comfortable!

Rick Campanelli has come a long way from the laid back, youthful wardrobe of his years as a Much Music VJ. As Co-Host for Global’s ET Canada, these days Rick spends his time sitting down with A-list stars and with this, we’ve seen a change in his look.

 

Recently inVancouverfor “ET Canada: Live” Rick sat down with AssignmentFashion.com to talk about his sense of style.

AF: So what are you wearing today?

 

R: A Parasuco shirt, the tie is Lab, and these are Seven jeans and I have Gucci boots on. And long johns, but I don’t know who makes them, maybe Mark’s Work Warehouse.

 

AF: So what do you wear casually?

 

R: Jeans and a t-shirt.

 

AF: What about designer wise?

 

R: Oh, not designer at all. I don’t wear designer really when I’m dressed this casual.

 

AF: Oh, you just don’t care. (lol)

 

R: Yeah, I just don’t care! I just wear any t-shirt I can find, a Joe Fresh t-shirt or white t-shirt.

 

 

 

AF: So what would be your go-to store for the basics be?

 

R: Joe Fresh and Walmart. Any place that sells white t-shirts and jeans. I’m a jeans kind of guy. And hoodies, I love wearing hoodies. Running shoes, you know that’s all casual. And when I’m in studio its all suits, from the store Pasqualini onCollege StreetinToronto. So I will wear lines like J.Lindeberg, Cinque, Caliban,7 Downie St.and Bikkemberg.

 

AF: So what’s most important to you when it comes to style?

 

R: I just want to feel comfortable, definitely. Comfort is first for me. I’m not a big fashion guy to begin with. Fashion is a little bit more important now that I’m on this big show called ET Canada, you got to look good right? But it’s not more important than comfort and the way things fit. And if I don’t like the way things fit or I’m not happy with something, I’m not going to wear it just because it’s a certain look or line. Most suits I’m wearing these days are so comfortable, they fit like a glove – tailored and taken in. I was never a big suit guy before this job and I was kind of hesitant in getting into the whole “I’ve got to wear a suit thing”, but now I like wearing suits and I am looking forward to work so I can wear a suit. I like dressing up. It adds to the confidence. When you dress up and look good it makes you feel confident, like you can take on the world. It’s like magic – go put this on and feel like a king! Oh yeah I do feel like a king, kind of thing.

 

AF: When it comes to celebrities what style do you like most and pulls off the style the best?

 

R: Brad Pitt has influenced me so much in everything that he wears. In casual stuff, basic  stuff. Like these camouflage pants I saw him wear, he took these camo pants and cut them ¾ length and wore them with sneakers, a t-shirt, and a hat. And Clooney, he can wear stuff like no one else can. Clooney and Brad Pitt have it going on for me.

 

AF: What’s your favourite event you’ve done in the past year?

 

R: It was just back in September, it was our 6^th birthday party. We were celebrating our 6 years on air. And I wore the most amazing double-breasted suit by TConcept. With a straight tie, pocket flared, looked like a flower, Italian shoes. And I felt amazing in it, I’m glad I didn’t wear jeans that night!

Its 80′s throw back with a sexy California girl twist at Vancouver Fashion week, with designer Lauren Elaine. Walking down the runway, sheer cover ups, maxi dresses, and vibrant swim wear, show casing 32 pieces for Spring Summer 2012. “Its a bit of Charlie’s Angels meets The Runaways”, Elaine describes her show.

Meeting with Lauren back stage after her show was amazing. You could tell she was excited and happy about the show as everyone else. I asked Elaine what the best part of being a designer was, and she smiled and said “always having something to wear”.
Lauren Elaine is still up coming in the fashion world, but since her first debut at L.A Fashion Week, 2009, she has had nothing but great success. Elaine has appeared on Americas Next Top Model as a designer in September 2011 for ANTM All Stars. “It was a really great experience”, -says Elaine. Elaine’s pieces have also graced the pages of Women’s Wear Daily and Vogue.
You can tell Elaine is extremely passionate, and very creative. She had started modeling at the age of 13, and appeared in films such as Sin City, The Ringer, and Memphis Rising:Elivis Returns (2012). Elaine is currently in development of filming a reality show based of her life as a designer. She described the show as a mix of “The Hills meets Americas Next Top Model“. The show will be called Model Mafia, and will be airing some time next year.

Watching Elaine’s collection during her show, I was completely mesmerized. The Cali Girl Rocker video at the beginning was fun and exciting to watch. The models all had big beachy curls in their hair, and bright coloured lips. I asked Elaine what she saw for trends for 2012, and she told me “Lots of neon colours, 80′s throw back, and maxi dresses”. Her collection defiantly had met all those criteria. Zebra print, fabric accents, off the shoulder tops, “Lolita” floral glam, and sequins. It’s really exactly how she described her collection… “Runaways meets Charlie’s Angels”.
I asked Elaine what it was like to move from being in front of the camera to being more involved behind the camera. “It is defiantly less stressful, and you have more control”, she explained. ” I love working with models, and most of my models are very close friends of mine.”

 
She shared with me a couple of her best moments so far in her fashion career. One is when one of her first shows, the seats were completely full. Another being, when her Little Red Riding Hood themed runway show, the last model walking down, had a real wolf walk beside her. “It was exciting and different, but defiantly a highlight in my career”. Elaine defiantly has a love for run way shows, themes , and being creative behind the camera. I asked Elaine where she saw herself and her collection 5 years from now, and she told me “its always a work in progress, and always growing”. She has an Eco line which is going to be her next focus in her career.

Maggie Bill Wardrobe Director for ET Canada

Maggie Bill has worked in the film and television industry for many years. Beginning her entertainment career initially as a producer, Maggie was getting tired with the job when the opportunity arose to fill in when short a wardrobe stylist.

“I had some experience in the fashion world and I just continued on from there. It just seemed to be my niche, and works for me.”

While in Torontodoing a job for a friend who was an agent for ET Canada, Maggie was asked if she wanted the position as head stylist for ET Canada. She said “Yes” and after living inVancouver for 11 years, Maggie moved toToronto on a three month contract, and the rest is history.

From the GRAMMYs to the Oscars, Maggie has outfitted the entire cast of ET Canada for the world’s most prestigious red carpets. Working with a team of trusted assistants, Maggie plans out the outfits for all six hosts on a daily basis – which is no easy task.

AF: Did you go to school for styling or wardrobe design?

M: No. I guess I just have a natural talent. You have to have a certain eye.

AF: What do you like to style Cheryl and Rick in?

M: It depends what they are doing. For the show, we like to give them an upscale fashion, a little more fashion forward, not the jeans and t-shirt kind of thing. Things that look flattering on them, things that look good on camera, like jewel tones and the right silhouette is very important, a lot of the fashion out there right now is loose and misshapen, and if you don’t have a waist you usually end up looking like a box. We really just try to make them look as good as they can, and feel as well as they can.

AF: Are there certain designers you use more often than not? Or do you just use everything?

M: Not really. I use many different designers. Some Canadian designers, some designers from all over the world, I work a lot with BCBG, I work a lot with a boutique called Want in Toronto. We have a show everyday, and we have 5 people to do everyday, so you have to be on the tips of your toes to try and keep everything organized.

AF: What designer best describes your sense of style?

M: Jean Paul Gaultier.

AF: And why is that?

M: I just love his look. I love Thierry Mugler, I like very edgy fashion without being clunky, I like edgy modern fashion. But Gaultier is my favourite.

AF: Is there any local or Canadian designers you try to speak of to get their name out there or do you just prefer working with the bigger designers?

M: I look at all the new designers coming up and all the fashion shows and pick try to pick them out and promote the ones that I think will do well. I try to get a scope of what’s going on and give the Canadian designers an opportunity, and if they don’t fill the bill, then I just get it from wherever I can.

AF: Is there any upcoming events that you are excited to style for?

M: Well yes, we are coming up to the awards season so first we will start with the Golden Globes, and then the Grammy’s and then the Oscars. And then of course the MTV Awards in January and February.

AF: And what is your favourite one been to date to style for?

AF: MTV. They’re funky; you can do more off the wall things with it and have some fun. It’s more youthful and energetic. A lot about colour, sparkle, and shape.

AF: How would you describe your sense of style?

M: Funky I guess, I kind of like a little uniform in my style. I find a certain look I like and I feel comfortable when I go out the door in the morning. I don’t want to have to think about my clothing, I need to look like a stylist and to look like I know what I am doing. It’s all about comfort for me, I have to work long hours and maintain the look all day. Comfort and a nice shape, age appropriate, I make it my own look and try to not copy anyone. If you came to my house you would be surprised at how small my wardrobe is. Everything has to mix and match. This way I know exactly what I have.

Attitude is very important in my job. You have to be sort of a psychologist in a way. You have to feel for what’s going on in someone’s personal life and know where to step in, and be comfortable if you want to make a change but you know how to not intrude on them. Attitude and a good sense of humour, because our hours are quite long and you just got to have a laugh.

AF: Do you have a certain fashion icon?

M: Betsy Johnson and Vivian Westwood. I love their energy and their longevity. And they are constantly able to change, keep up, and be very youthful.

He is now embarking on another exciting new project: Gerald is proud to announce his role as Pawnee Killer in Endemol USA’s and AMC ‘s highly anticipated brand new historical drama “Hell On Wheels”, now confirmed for a November 6th, 2011 premiere on AMC. The premiere for “Hell on Wheels” will be held at the Regal L.A. Live Theatres on Thursday, October 27th, 2011 in Los Angeles.

Not so much I tried trending but eventually went to back to doing my own thing but I always try to keep an open mind. Trends are exactly what they are, here one day gone the next, and I just stick to what works for me.
 
 

What advice would you give to young women/men trying to find their personal style?

Find out who you are as an individual first & foremost and allow yourself to think out of the box and BELIEVE that you are your own person and go with what gives you confidence, a sense of your own being and become what you wear & portray to the world. Be yourself and explore!

What’s your opinion of fashion magazines?Do you read them?

GQ is what I will usually grip when I need to see what’s current & what’s not. It’s always good to see other people’s sense of style & vision. We are all gifted in our own way even when it comes to personal style.

What was your favorite style decade?

(grunge, hippy, 40’s, …) The 80’s with the rocked out look! It was bold and balls to the walls even when it came to glam rock!

What does style mean to you?

Style is who you are at any giving “moment” in your life; where your current mindset is. Style represents your individuality where you are at on your personal journey, both personally & professionally. If you are consciously aware of your emotional, mental, physical and spiritual well being that will dictate as to what your style is as well because your style is what you are representing to the world in terms of who you are.
 

Do you dress for yourself or for others ?

Both, because what I do in film & television is all mostly about image initially until they get see, hear & feel the talent on screen. You need to draw them in initially with something and what better way is there then by expressing yourself through your own personal style.
 

Do you have any beauty or fashion tips you’d like to share?

Personal hygiene is a must.
 

How has your personal style changed over the years?

Constantly because I am growing emotionally, mentally, physically & spiritually as I evolve as a “spiritual” being housed in this “human” being. I am not who I was yesterday because today will dictate who I will be tomorrow but I am making sure that I am having fun at the same time & exploring myself through the blessings & the trials of life. Personally, what you see is where I am at with myself, both inside & out, through the style that I currently portray.
 

What do you think about the way men/women dress in this city? Do you find Vancouver’s style different from other cities you’ve been to or lived in?

Yeah Vancouver is more organic in most cases and Toronto is more of a in-your-face-look-at-me. New York speaks for itself its more, variety, universal & global.
 

Have you ever felt pressured to look a certain way? Why? What did you do about it?

Yeah I’ve felt that pressure from the industry but then I figured at the end of the day I know who I am and I don’t need anybody telling me who I should be. I am the only one who has walked in these moccasins on this journey we call life and I will continue to do so till the day I go home to Creator . So I ended up sticking to my cultural roots because that is who I truly am even amongst the chaos and drama this industry can and will bring.

Do you think fashion and trends are affected by media? Is this a good thing?

No I think it’s actually the other way around. The media is driven by what is current and they will either accept it or reject and put their own spin on it regardless. You just can’t take any of it personally and just stick to the beat of your own drum.
 
 

What do you think about the Yoga craze in Vancouver? Would we ever find you out for lunch in yoga pants?

No yoga is not my thing I have my spirituality where I can practice anywhere at any given moment. That can be by taking a walk or saying a simple prayer to give thanks for this day and any specific moment in my life.

How would you describe your city’s style?

Rocked out cool with a spiritual edge!!

How would you describe your style?

Proud, dignified and representing my cultural roots with an edge that brings it into the 21st Century.

My breastplate.

How do you like a woman to dress?

Sophisticated but with an edge as long as it represents them as givers of life because they are truly powerful, sacred and beautiful beings.

Personal hygiene and shave where and when you must.

Have you ever had a mani/pedi or gone for a facial? Why or why not?

We live in a different society today and we must learn to adapt and evolve and be secure with who we are as men and individuals. Why live life in fear when life is meant to be lived. At the end of the day first impressions are lasting impressions and you should only answer to Creator and take care of the vessel that he has given you in life to walk in this physical realm we call Mother Earth and LIFE!!

Patricia Piche is phenomenal and a true visionary. I just tell her this is the look I am looking for, ex. Indian Matrix and she goes back and brings my vision to life. I have been told that I am her muse and am honored.

 
 
It wasn’t long ago that a kid emerged from a family of 15 in northern Alberta with little to his name except a relentless drive to become a major player in the entertainment world. Armed with a set of spiritual values and beliefs passed onto him by his native culture, Gerald Auger was determined to prove that if the sky is the limit, there’s no doubt about the heights he could achieve and to this day, he still lives by this motto.  As a youth, Gerald witnessed poverty, violence and tragedy while living on the streets in various cities in Canada, before deciding to turn his life around.  Eventually, Gerald received a diploma in Marketing/Management and a certificate for Small Business Management from Grande Prairie Regional College and received the Charles S. Nobleship Award for Student Leadership from the Department of Advanced Education and the Province of Alberta. He took acting lessons at Edmonton’s Great West Canadian Talent Company, but is mostly self-taught in terms of acting by people watching and studying other actor’s methods on various movie sets and watching programs such as The Actors Studio, and participating in Casting Workshops as well.

 ET Canada  LIVE In Vancouver Oct 24th-26th

ET Canada will be LIVE at Jack Poole Plaza at the Vancouver Convention Centre for three amazing shows on Oct 24, 25, and 26!  Come and be part of the audience for this ET Canada special event. Cheryl and Rick will host with help from our Vancouver correspondent Erin Cebula.

“We recently traveled to South Sudan to see a country and people destroyed after 40 years of civil war. Over 2 million people have been killed with another 4 million displaced, leaving behind a country of women and young men with fractured hope for their futures.” says Peake. “After only 7 days on the ground, we became committed to these people for life. Within 3 months of our return to Canada, we drilled over 100 wells, bringing clean water to over 100,000 people. This upcoming dry season we have committed to drill 200 more.”

As with all of the Obakki Foundation’s fundraising projects, 100% of money raised will go towards drilling the much needed water wells in Sudan. Projects start immediately and auction winners will quickly be able to see the impact their donations have created.

Inspired by the rich tapestry of curve and colour that is Venice, Paloma Picasso’s Venezia collection is, to say the least, incredible. Her muse, cultural symbols like hanging lanterns and bowing Venetian architecture. The iconic shapes make for a dramatic collection flooded with the spirit of the City of Water.

Like Picasso herself, her collections are dynamic and colourful. Unmistakably inspired by the many places she has travelled, her jewellery is absolutely stunning. The beautiful Moroccan sets, Marrakesh and Zellige, are full of geometry, symmetry and pattern. Conjuring the 90’s, her Graffiti collection is more mischievous and young, much like her candy-for-grown-ups collection, Sugar Stacks. In contrast to the stark geometric sets and playful essence of previous collections, polished Venezia is a perfect combination of strong curving lines and feminine detail.

Comprised of four components, each part of the collection is representative of something frequently seen in Venice, and aptly named so. Colourful Palina symbolizes the striped gondola mooring poles common of the region. Silver bangles and rings lined with assorted shades of enamel can be piled on for a customized look, mix and matched with bold, striped cross pendants and classic hoop earrings of the same design. The look is fun and bright, but far from juvenile.

Cast-iron window gates act as the muse for Picasso’s Goldini set. Truly elegant, the graceful arcs are certain to add a feminine touch to any outfit. The Goldini earrings are bold and notably high-class. Some are simple with single curving links, others dangle gracefully detailed in diamond. The most intricate end in long tassels speckled with amethysts. The heart-shaped pendants are sweet and easy to wear, while the curvilinear rings are a little more daring. The most prominent piece however, is the gold and diamond link necklace. Although it is just as refined as the other pieces, something about the tripolo gold link chain succeeded by five diamond encrusted quadruplo links is remarkable. Put simply, it’s breath-taking, undeniably the most high-end piece.

Luce is a set inspired by the hanging lanterns of Venice. The concept is readily apparent as the spiralling pendants and earrings catch light when worn, almost as if lit from within. The difference in texture inside the spiral also makes for a beautiful effect. As the piece moves, the coarse interior sparkles. There is a sense of symmetry in the spirals, again shown off by movement. The earrings are delicate, the pendants captivating. The pendants themselves are subtle, yet the fragile chains from which they hang are so slight they almost disappear so that all focus is on the lantern.

The Stella set calls upon the stars for inspiration, as in the ones found behind the lion sculptures in the Basilica San Marco in Venice and the gorgeous balustrades and arches of Venetian architecture. Varying styles of pendants, earrings and rings are all included, from a simple sterling silver pendant, to extravagant star-shaped earrings iced in diamonds. The dazzling gold and diamond hoops stand out, yet they are entirely sophisticated.

The most striking piece, perhaps of the whole collection, is the chunky gold ring with blue enamel. Dotted with stars and circled in diamonds, the ring makes a statement unlike any other. Different from the rest of the collection, the ring is much louder than the definite romance of the sweeping Goldini curves and enchanting Luce spirals.

Raphael Mazzucco, a Vancouvernative has made a name for himself over the years for his ability to capture the raw honest beauty in his subjects. Raphael is also known as to the Vancouver Soccer faithful as one of the best home grown forwards Canada Has produced even playing in the 1984 LA Olympics. He was discovered while playing for the whitecaps by photographer Bruce Weber, [1] who discovered Raph at one of the games, created a Calvin Klein Campaign around this Canadian heart throb. Artist Peter Beard expresses his belief, “sometimes out of a bullfighter comes a great writer and out of soccer has now come a great artist.”

This year Raphael has teamed with Jimmy Iovine, the Interscope Records mogul, who came up with the idea [via the Black-Eyed Pea will.i.am] and Diddy as an editor as well. The book features some of the most famous bottoms on the planet with the likes of Paris Hilton, Fergie, Clooney’s new gal Stacy Keibler, Pamela Anderson and even Vancouver’s own Sarah McLachlan.

The launch of the book took place in NYC on Oct 11^th 2011 at the Tony Shafrazi Gallery with Raphael, Jimmy Iovine and Diddy and a who’s who of their celeb friends. The book of Mazzucco’s photos focusing just on the female bottom may seem a bit cheeky (yes I went with the obvious pun) but when you look at the photos inside its obvious what you are looking at is photographic art at its best. Raphael approached this project like no other and the work shows. It’s unique, beautiful and most important FUN! Not everything in the art world needs to be stuffy and overly sophisticated. As Interscope Records owner Jimmy Iovine said about the book “You have to get the joke …its fun!”

Rumor has it that long time friend event promoter Vernard Goud owner of Luvngrace is in talks to bring Raphael home to Vancouver to ‘show off’ “CULO“. Now my fellow Vancouverites and lovers of Art and Photography lets send the message to Raphael and Mr. Jimmy Iovine to have a Vancouver launch/home coming for one of the cities most successful photographer. We don’t often get a chance to honour or artists or do a good job of it when we do get the chance, so let’s take this opportunity to get our voice out and tell the powers that be to bring “CULO” toVancouverand show NYC how we roll Vancity style. We are too often thought of as a no fun city and its time to change.

On September 18th 2011, I met up with the wonderful Zara Durrani at Bean Around The World Coffee on Davie Street downtown Vancouver. We had an interesting chat about her new show Life and Style as well as her personal life.

Zara Durrani grew up in Lahore, Pakistan a completely different world for most of us; daily goals were not to try and become famous or to get a promotion at work, it was about survival. It was simple; make enough money to take care of your family, to feed them, and to send them to school. To Canadians that sounds pretty straight forward, right, but in Zara’s world, her family struggled to do so. Even with the difficulties of life in Lahore, Zara was a star student and had the grades to prove it. She also loved performing in the school plays; so much so that for one in particular production she played multiple characters and helped put it all together.

With life in Pakistan not getting any better, the family started on a journey that would take them across  Southeast Asia and even Turkey. During this time, Zara was able to grow up in different cultures learning and embracing their customs, something she attributes to her continued spiritual growth and open mindedness to all cultures and what they can offer to make life better for us all.

Her parents knew that Canada was the place for a better life and education for Zara, as they barely had enough money to keep her in school in Pakistan. It was a complete “act of faith”, taking the entire family’s savings, just so they could come to the land of opportunity. The flight was over 24 hours long and when I asked her what her first thoughts were as she stepped of the plane, she took a moment to reflect, and then remembers herself saying “Wow, this is it…a dream come true”. It took a total of 6 years for the immigration process to actually happen, but she knew that this was going to be a new beginning; the place she had longed for was finally reality.

Zara finished high school in Canada and began training for the military, even passing selection, but fait intervened and Zara started on her path in the entertainment industry instead. When Canada’s Next Top Model first came out, Zara and her mother were watching the show and her mom says “Zara, you could be one of those girls”. That comment sparked some curiosity in Zara; she searched online and found a modeling gig for hair models. Once on stage in the spotlight again, the little performer from Lahore came back to her and she felt herself open up and transform. She knew she had found her calling. She says she never went to modeling school, and that it comes naturally to her, just like breathing, “You either got it, or you don’t”.

The hair modeling lead to more shoots and modest success as a model, and that eventually lead her back toward acting. Acting gave Zara something that modeling did not: the ability to voice herself. She could finally share with her audience, to make them laugh, to cry and stating that “becoming a different person, a character, is something so beautiful”, and “it is a God given talent.” Zara believes that everyone is an artist, more than just the physical and one’s ego; God lets energy flow through one’s self to become this other person, and everything that one does in their life is spiritual.

Zara’s stardom slowly rose over the next years with modeling campaigns and some acting parts. To keep grounded, she started Bikram yoga 10 years ago to help her mind and heart get away from her everyday physical life. She then tried Hatha yoga, a new awakening of sorts for Zara. Hatha teaches that the emotional and the physical being are not separate, but rather connected with one another. When the body is sick, so is the heart and mind, and vice versa. Wanting to do something more using her entertainment background, Zara is now the official reporter for the Conference of Sustainable Development with the United Nations, something she has always wanted to do.

After about 5 years of modeling and acting, Zara started to notice her personal growth was not moving forward as her career. She started on a spiritual journey to find more meaning in what she was doing. While she enjoyed her work in the entertainment industry Zara wanted more from herself and more from an industry that often produces a hollow and disingenuous product.  Zara travelled to Indonesia in 2010 to further her spiritual and personal growth and found a secluded Yoga center where she could master her Yoga technique while finding herself.

When she returned to Vancouver, Zara briefly hosted a show called Van Essence. The focus of the show was to showcase fashion and entertainment stories. The show was short lived, but Zara was not done just yet. She started her own show; “Life and Style with Zara Durrani” that originally aired on JoyTV but has since moved to ChekTV airing Wednesday’s at 7pm and re-runs on Sunday’s at 2:30pm.

‘Life and Style’ is an Art and Entertainment show that explores spiritual well being and empowerment to women and people of colour. Last year, Zara was a speaker at a small gathering for International Women’s Day, where she spoke on behalf of Muslim women. In the media today, most models are Caucasian and there aren’t many of colour. Zara wants to be someone who stands up for women of colour, and she is so proud to have represented women of colour by modeling, acting, and now host to a new show.  As a community, we should have more people that actually represent what our population is.

People that have been on the show say no other interviewer has asked them such unique and personal questions before. People from all over are thanking her for doing the show because of the range of topics she covers and the amazing stories she shares. “We had one of the first few married gay couples [in British Columbia] on our show, and one of them was a priest. They were telling me their story and as I’m walking down Davie Street, people are stopping me and saying”:

“… thank you, for doing that story.  I am going to show that story to my mother.”

“Its means a lot, I must be doing something right. Those things come on the days when I’m having the hardest times, and when I’m down.” Zara also notes that her whole team on the show is 100% volunteers, and she is very thankful to have each and every one of them aboard. She has been working on this show since January. She wanted to add that:

“I would not have come this far if it wasn’t for my amazing team of individuals, they are very dedicated, working professionals, who believe in me, and believe in the project. It makes me feel really loved”.

I found Zara to be a genuine individual; she listened to my questions and answered with honest and thoughtful responses, even giving me pointers on my own new start to the business. Zara has great plans for the future of her show, and big names to chat with. She recently sat down to tape an interview with Vancouver’s own Bif Naked and interviews from VIFF (Vancouver’s Film Festival) including Mayor Gregor Robertson, ET Canada’s Rick Campanelli and Chelah Horsdal. Zara hopes to bring her unique line of questions and lifestyle into your homes for years to come and we wish her the best in doing so.

I was fortunate enough to interview Nicole Bridger about her Spring/Summer Collection show at Eco Fashion Week. The pastel palette is more calm than Easter egg bright, the muted hues giving the airy clothes a sense of refinement. Flush with movement, the fabrics drape beautifully over the barefoot models. As amazing as the collection is, it is more than just a set of eco-friendly frocks. Inspired by events in her own life, Bridger creates a masterpiece of visible emotion, complimented by music, yoga and dance.

AF: What do you do to prepare for a show?

NB: Nothing special. I had a doctor’s appointment this morning. I don’t really get nervous before events, I love what I’m doing.

AF: Can you tell me about your inspiration for this collection?

NB: There’s a story there. It’s about letting go and starting over. I had a deep yearning to find my true life partner. If you go back to my older seasons you can see the story. I talk about it very openly. There’s a story there of heart ache and divorce and love. So in this season, I came to a place where I realized I needed to be happy and present in my life just as it is, especially with my son, being a single mamma. I had to totally surrender and know that everything would be ok.  I said, “Okay, here’s what I’m hoping for but I’m going to let you put it into place in your own time.”

AF: Why did you incorporate dance and yoga into your show?

NB: I’ve always been super inspired by dance, and since my inspiration has such a story behind it, it’s a way to tell it through movement and song. You’ll get a sense of what the story is by watching it. As the music draws the emotion of the story the dancers and the yogis portray it. It shows how easy the clothing is to wear, because it showcases the draping.

AF: You asked that your models be less done up. Why is that?

NB: Well I want them to look natural, like a “I-was-just-at-the-beach” look. Very dishevelled, very relaxed, with a natural glow.

AF: I noticed your designs have no patterns. Is there a reason for that?

NB: I like all solids, you can really see the timelessness of the clothing.  It’s about the integrity of the fabric, the draping, the sculpting; that’s the beauty and the interest. It makes you want to look at it.

AF: Are the fabrics all natural?

NB: Well all-natural is a very encompassing word. I use fabrics that are socially conscious. They are better for the environment and ethically sourced. Tensel comes from eucalyptus plants, linen is very sustainable. One piece comes from recycled pop bottles.

AF: Is there any one piece in particular that is your favourite?

NB: One piece that really stands out is the longer dress in blue and in peach. It really shows off the draping.

AF: Anything else you want to say about the show?

NB: Just that I love Eco Fashion Week. These guys are awesome. There are not a lot of fashion weeks out there that are so down to earth. That’s why I like working with them. I don’t really show at other shows in the city. And I love these guys. It’s amazing what they’re doing. It’s something that our city can be known for internationally.

Bridger is a strong woman and a talented designer to say the least. That her story stirred something within the audience was obvious by the show’s reception. Yet her inspiration went further, touching even the yogis and the dancers, as was evident in the passion of their performance. As one of the dancers stated, “Nicole was very open when she told us her story. We were so inspired.”

Wide windows and lavender walls welcomed guests as they came to see Kari Staten’s final showing in her Vancouver studio. The inspired jewellery designer, who will soon be moving to Edmonton, Alberta, invited friends and fans alike to experience her stunning fall winter collection.

Comprised of three concepts, Inception, Baroque Warrior and Snow Queen, the collection is rich in character and full of eye-catching details.  Each idea embodies its own unique essence, yet the cohesion between this collection in itself, as well as amongst Kari’s previous collections is apparent.

Inception may be dark but it is far from bleak. An expression of new beginnings, it is both mysterious and enchanting. Although originally planned to be strictly composed of metal, Kari added beads and stones. The black accentuates the chains, while touches of leather keep the collection down to earth.  The jet black jewels, certain to ignite any look, are overshadowed only by the silver Nightshade Swarvoski crystals. Utterly sophisticated, Kari wanted the look to make a statement of simplicity.

Baroque Warrior, the most colourful of the three sets, is an homage to French culture. As if Joan of Arc were going to war, but not without her jewels. Ripe with berry tones complemented by dazzling gold, the vibrant jewels can’t help but be noticed. The standout piece is a gorgeous statement necklace. Layers of beads in vivid plums and scarlets highlight the gold discs engraved with the French words “oui” and “non” for an extra touch of class. The Fleur De Lise, a symbol of France, can also be found throughout the entire collection.

The final component, Snow Queen, is elegant and clean. Whites, browns and golds combine to create a look that is reminiscent of winter. The neutrality is calming, the bright, whites captivating. Pale leather and polished stones give it a rugged western feel, yet it is still entirely refined. The most fascinating piece, another remarkable necklace, is comprised of white river stone. The stones look raw, while the pearls look classic, for a look is both earthy and refined.

Delightful brooches draped in chains and charms add a dramatic touch to Kari’s already wide array of jewellery. What’s more, she has now added rings to her repertoire, with three stunning cocktail rings, one from each set.

Aside from viewing the collection, guests were treated to a spread of delicious canapés and chocolates. Most fantastic of all though were the little cookies baked specially for the launch by Kari’s father (with a little help from her mother). Another fun addition, guests could put their names in for door prizes, one of which I was lucky enough to win. And I can tell you, I am more than excited to show off my spectacular Zuka earrings.

I recently posted a PHOTO EDITORIAL, shot by Kyle Goldie that featured an LA based model named Ayden Vargas. I was instantly taken with her look and asked Kyle to give me some back ground on her because I thought she looked interesting. He told me a bit of her story so I read her bio and took an instant liking to this young actress/model who also dances/Choreographs and who’s athletic pursuits rival most professional athletes. Did I also mention she suffers from Meniere’s Disease which has left her deaf in her left ear and suffering bouts of vertigo. See I told you this was one interesting … OH WAIT … she is running for Miss California 2012 … phew … I think I have it all covered now.

Ayden was approached in 2009 for America’s next top Model where she made it  to the top 30, but dropped out believing reality TV was not the way to build her career, then after signing with some professional agencies Ayden now has a promising acting and modeling career ahead of her. This December Ayden has her first speaking role in a movie airing on the ‘Lifetime’ Network, officially making her a professional Model and Actress.

“Getting that call – that I got my first speaking role was very encouraging. It made me want to learn more and more about what it takes to be truly compelling & memorable. It’s very exciting & intimidating!”

Under her current talent management she continues  to peruse acting and still books modeling jobs all while she prepares to compete in Miss California USA® contest come January 2012.

I asked Ayden her thoughts on the Miss California Contest and pageants in general and how she came to the decision to take part. Her answer fit the personality of this responsible, hardworking young women I have come to know while putting this piece together, saying:

“I am not typically the type of person you would see in a pageant and honestly I think that’s why it’s been such an exuberant experience. Being a short, tattooed, half deaf, rock climber, who’s never done a pageant in her life – I feel like I am making this pageant fit me as opposed to the other way around. It’s been very liberating to not have the desire to fit into a mold ‘cause there isn’t one that would fit me!”

Being an underdog, Ayden believes she can give a voice to those people who are under-appreciated and get looked over because they maybe don’t fit the mainstream mold set by society.

“My responsibility & focus is to represent the people I feel aren’t being represented by pageants – which are supposed to be the face & voice of the collective female population. Athletes, hipsters, underappreciated designers, make-up artists, photographers, indie film makers, small labels, musicians, people with disabilities…the list goes on and on. I want this experience to be a platform for those of us that typically fly beneath the radar – and not because we lack the talent or ambition, but because people have yet to really open their doors to all the versatility that their community has to offer.”

Outside of modeling, acting and pageants Ayden has created ‘Hear the world run‘ as part of the ‘Hear the world‘ initiative that raises awareness for the hearing impaired. Being hearing impaired herself Ayden naturally felt a strong affinity for this initiative which boasts a large range of celebrities from Michael Buble, Bryan Adams to the late Amy Winehouse; Ayden`s goal is to use her platform as a Miss California contestant to further ‘Hear The World’ and her off shoot ‘Hear The World Run’.

Ayden has always been a very athletic individual from an early age she started gymnastics and dance and playedsoccerthrough to and including college. Ayden has been rock climbing since she was 14 and has been sponsored by Evolv Climbing and Pranafor rockclimbing, Phonak for running & has modeled for several climbing, running, and yoga brands around the world.

What has impressed me most about getting to know Ayden is her free spirit and her ability to see the positive in any situation put in front of her. She left home at an early age to pursue alternate education saying :

“… by the time I got into modeling & acting my parents had little input about my choices.  Every now and then I’ll get a phone call or an e-mail from my family asking me about my studies in Mammal Zoology – they just don’t want me to give up on my other dreams and I appreciate that.”

Her  belief in herself and the confidence in her ability to do whatever she puts her mind to comes from a core belief:

” [ I ] … keep achieving, adjusting, never settle, and not to allow myself to be unhappy about something that I can’t change. You can’t let other people write your boundaries. You have to own your life. “
