Vancouver Designer Tina Tam of Carnal Design
Boredom during summer breaks from school in her hometown of Calgary, Alberta led to Tina Tam##Q##s interest in arts and crafts. As a youth, Tam did anything creative to keep her busy, from beaded jewellery to re-fashioning old clothes to create new looks. Carnal Design was conceptualized as a project in her final year at the Art Institute of Vancouver in 2008. She graduated with the Most Outstanding Collection Award for her collection, inspired by heavy metal and rock ##Q##n roll with a femme fatale attitude. She has since developed Carnal Design into a brand that clothes Vancouver women with a sexy, confident edge.
For her Spring Summer 2012 line Tina has created a fun, coloured and floral collection for S/S 2012. Tam was inspired by a sunny field of bright flowers, and mixed solid colours and prints with carefully cut lines and shapes to make each piece stand out and accentuate the female form. Flirty lines and versatility make up the aesthetic. “We wanted to create a collection that was fun and allowed women to wear the pieces for different occasions, from work parties to the beach,” says Tam. The Pleated Dress works as a cover-up on the beach or for a party, while the Milla Dress adds flair to the workplace, and can be easily restyled for night.
