Every season, the Tommy Hilfiger show is a NYFW talking point, bringing in some of the most high profile spectators to see how Mr Hilfiger is going to knock this season’s show out of the park. Known for his incredible showmanship, as well as on point collections, his shows are a highlight for even the most seasoned Fashion Week attendees.
This year, Tommy Hilfiger is also celebrating his 30 year anniversary in the industry, and with his F/W 15 collection he once again showed why he is one of the top players at this game. Celebrating in the most all American way, this season he ran with the athletic trend and took us to the big game.
Hosted at the Park Avenue Armoury once again, this season he transformed this historic building’s interior into a football stadium complete with bleachers, football field and Jumbotron flashing up “player profiles” including Tommy himself as well as some of his starting line up, such as models Gigi Hadid and Jourdan Dunn. No sporting event would be complete without some takeaway team merchandise, and spectators were able to shop for a few pieces of the collection as it hit the runway, including the faux fur alumni sweaters and anniversary clutches.
The athletic trend is definitely quite polarising, but Hilfiger somehow managed to completely diffuse that notion and made it effortlessly elegant, fusing iconic styles of the late Sixties and early Seventies with a vibrant gameday spirit, whilst adding his unique eye and a hefty dose of whimsy to round out his impressive collection.
The collection itself was in mustard yellows, burgundy and navy blue, in classic silhouettes, renewed with Hilfiger’s signature varsity details. Athletic-style sweatshirts, some in cozy faux fur, feature a commemorative intarsia 30. Pleated and pieced skirts were a mainstay of the collection, and the eye-catching use of leather in some of the later pieces really captivated. Accessories included whimsical helmet motifs on enamel jewelry and football charms on the zip-top oversized anniversary clutch.
I always like to talk about my favourite piece from a collection, but this time I am going to be greedy and add 3 pieces to my want list. I am a big tartan fan, so the plaid dress with brass buckle and button details called my name, and the beautiful cut and incredible collar sealed the deal – I NEED that dress! I was also blown away by the navy blue cape – again, the brass details took this piece to the next level and the striped band at the hem made this mainstay piece truly unique. Lastly, can we talk about the shoes?! I love how much fun Tommy has with his accessories and this season was no exception, but for me it was all about the wedge football sneakers.
Congratulations to Tommy Hilfiger, who showed us once again that even after 30 years in the business, he can wow us with something new and refreshing whist staying true to his iconic brand. I can’t wait to see what you bring us over the next 30 years, Tommy!
